No news is....no news. Well, actually there are one or two quick updates.
I am meeting with library trustees this evening. We will be reviewing the report from Aegis Engineering Services, which did the test on the insulation in the attic. After taking samples from seven locations throughout the building, they used polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (who knew?...I would have used my nose) to determine that there was in fact no smoke damage to the insulation.
At the same time, we have engaged a group called Energy Efficient Investments to review our insulation profile and to make recommendations on how we can improve efficiency. We had actually been talking to them before our blessed event on August 3rd. They propose a range of things that we can do to rectify areas of energy loss in the attic and cupola. We have a singular opportunity to make improvements given the fact that we are working in the shell of a building. The trustees and staff have long been interested in decreasing our energy consumption, which has resulted in an almost 40% decrease in fuel costs over the past ten years. But we know we can do more.
And on the contractor front, we are expecting our bids to come in this Thursday. When the trustees make the decision on which contractor to select and we have a clear workplan, we will have a much better answer to those who come to the library saying "So, when do you think you'll be opening over there." Bear with us.
