books and shots

No, I have not taken to drink.  I'm happy to report that I have successfully registered for the first Covid vaccine (under 65, but with enough other stuff going on...).  That part wasn't that painful  Really.  If you hear of people who are having difficulty signing up, you can refer them to us.  We have been walking some people through the process and we are also able to let people use our computers if they do not have access at home.

I am almost finished with "Red Dress in Black and White"

and after some initial ambivalence I totally committed.  I'm struck by the fact that even about ten pages from the end, am still clueless on how it will be resolved or even how I want it to be resolved.  Were the characters lovable?  Would I want to have tea with them, even at a social distance?  Probably not.  But they were compelling and well drawn and I wanted to learn more.  And the rich back drop of conflict wracked Turkey in the last decades also drew me in.  The book covers one 24 hour period during which an american woman tries to plot her escape from her complicated life in Turkey, interspersed with the various backstories of the other characters.   I also liked the photography subtheme (reminded me of Shadow King) about war torn Ethiopia, which had a photographer character.
How can photographers capture people and places in ways that words can't.  A different kind of storytelling.

Which reminds me of the fact that photographers Dorothea Lange and Ansel Adams' both took images of Japanese internment camps.  Lange's were banned (too much truth telling), while Adams were used by the state department etc., because they were beautiful and told a white washed story.  First photo is Lang's (Anchor Editions), second Adams' .(Library of Congress)
