This pandemic business may bring me into the 21st century. True confessions, I'm a bit of a Luddite. Library users know that my technology hero is Karen Dixon who is our "go to" person for all things technological. But I am biting the bullet and it feels ok. There need to be some upsides of all of this international chaos.
I met with other department heads today via Zoom and it worked remarkably well. It was interactive and it was nice to see all of the nice faces of my colleagues. On Friday I downloaded Libby (the app on our website for downloading ebooks and audiobooks) and now have the new Kate Atkinson "Big Sky" on my phone. I listened to it on a long walk--it worked well, though I have to say, I realized that I was paying no attention to my surroundings while on my walk and that's not an entirely positive thing.
And we learned that we could have a free trial of something called "tumblebooks" so Karen put that on our website today. It provides all kinds of access to kids materials--check it out and as I mentioned last time, Hoopla (for movies, music and books) is on its way.
My heartbreaking news is that we have suspended curbside pickup of library materials for the moment. We have been getting no, nada, zippo info from the state or feds on whether this is a service that is safe to provide, so we are erring on the side of caution. It's a virtual world for a while and time to dip into all of those books you've been keeping on your shelves that were never read or worth reading again.
I am thoroughly enjoying the new Hilary Mantel book "the Mirror and the Light"--I confess I actually bought it for myself, since I have several family members who will also want to read it. And I'm almost done listening to the new Robert Harris "The second Sleep," a post apocalyptic tale that is hitting all too close to home. Still really addictively good, though it's not my usual genre.
So, reading, cooking, walking. All of these are good things. And, I don't need to decide whether to close the library tomorrow morning, given the weather forecast. See, there's always a silver lining. More anon...dvd
