signs of spring

I always collect signs of spring this time of year.  One early sign just recently witnessed was a couple of intrepid lacrosse players practicing on the snow covered lawn in front of the library.  Another sign, more by their absence, were lawns and snowbanks with no campaign signs.  And speaking of campaign signs, thanks to library trustee Emilie Burack for her update on the library situation at town meeting and her recognition of library staff.  The text of Emilie's comments is below fyi

Good Morning.  My name is Emilie Burack.  I’m a trustee of the HTL.  Since August 3rd, when the Hopkinton Town Library was struck by lightning, we have been reminded daily of all the things for which we are thankful: the Hopkinton Fire Department and neighboring departments that came to our rescue, local libraries that opened their doors to our patrons, town department staff who have supported us and shared their space, and the many members of the community who have supported us in so many ways.

I’m happy to report that our insurance company, Primex, will be underwriting most expenses to bring the library back to where it was on the morning of August 3rd.  That said, we have had the singular opportunity to review all aspects of our layout and service plan during this period when our building has been empty.  Luckily, we began this restoration process armed with ideas and data collected from the community and staff through our recent long-range planning process. This information has guided us as we’ve worked to restore, reimagine and improve our library interior. Our improvements have been made possible partially through donations to the Hopkinton Library Foundation and include:

      Improved energy efficiency throughout building
Improved lighting in the main library
      Quiet study and meeting space
      Updated technology, and
      Updated furnishings

Meanwhile, we have a fully functioning mini library on the lower level of the Slusser Center in the pool room.  Despite our size, we have circulated almost 10,000 items (books, museum passes, movies etc.) and over 7,000 electronic items since last August.  And remember, all of our online services continue and our wonderful staff continues to offer its usual high level of service.  We are currently expecting to reopen sometime in May.  We’ll let everyone know when we’re having the party!

And finally, another sign of spring is  St. Patrick's Day.  This year instead of the usual corned beef and cabbage, I tried a Guinness Pie.  It may be my go to recipe for the occasion from now on.  Absolutely delicious!
