Many people have commented that "the building doesn't look that bad" In fact, we are very lucky to have the building at all and from a "drive by" point of view, it looks pretty good. What really killed us was the smoke damage. Fire Chief Jeff Yale explained that during our event, we experienced a "temperature inversion"--smoke usually rises, but in our case, there was cool air and rain coming in from above, which made the smoke sink to the floor. This was particularly dangerous for the fire fighters inside, who could not see their hands in front of their faces. The entire library proper was engulfed with noxious smoke from burning wood, plastic and insulation, which made its way into all porous materials. Like books. We are so thankful for the valiant work of the Hopkinton Fire Department and the departments of neighboring towns.
Still, as I've mentioned before, the prospects for cleaning the majority of the collection is high. And, if you're itching for a book, stop by. Our collection continues to grow--movies and audiobooks as well. We'd love to see you!
