It's been interesting to note how different the responses to the pandemic are from the craving for escape and more escape ("load me up with Dick Francis mysteries" or "anything by Alexander McCall Smith") to people who are immersing themselves in the literature of race, both non-fiction books and books by authors of color. And some people are doing a bit of both. One of the library staff, Elissa Barr is putting a reading list together "Race Matters" containing fiction and non-fiction titles. We'll be posting that on our website.
Balancing reading to inform and to escape is a treasure. I found the piece by Donna Tartt (author of "The Goldfinch" among others) on Charles Portis (author of "True Grit" among others) in this past Sunday's NYT Book Review particularly engaging on the subject of reading for comfort and escape. It's a nice read. I noted that while we own the two versions of the movie (John Wayne and the recent one with Jeff Bridges), we didn't have a copy of "True Grit" in the collection. I've remedied that. It is available as an audiobook and ebook.
I wish you all the pleasures of reading for every reason. What a gift.
