Great programs this weekend!

It's a busy time of year but you should try to take time to come to two great programs this weekend. On Saturday Dec. 17 at 3:30pm, 2011 Grammy nominee Judy Pancoast will be here for a family concert. On Sunday Dec. 18 at 4pm, our own local resident Kevin Gardner will be here to read from a variety of works for all ages including A Child's Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas and The Tomten by Astrid Lindgren.

Looking for a new way to enjoy the outdoors? It's on the path behind the playground (which is behind the Hopkinton Town Library). The book, Moose Tracks, by Karma Wilson, is displayed along the path for you and your family to read as you walk. The book was generously donated by Main Street Bookends, located in Warner, NH. Knowlton Realtors provided the box holding the trail notebook. Be sure to let us know that you've been on the trail by recording it in the notebook and tell us what you think!

The Story Walk TM will be there from now until spring, for you to enjoy in sneakers or snowshoes!

Join us for our 3rd annual Hot Air Balloon Glow this Wednesday 7/13 at 7:30pm on the lawn in front of the library. There will be a tethered balloon that will glow as it gets dark outside and another balloon on the ground for kids to run around inside. Music provided by the Strawberry Jam Band. Bring a picnic and enjoy the spectacle! Thanks to Ben Cochran for bringing his balloon again this year. For all ages! No signup required.

Tonight at 6:30 the Pontine Theatre presents The Story of a Bad Boy. Pontine has created an original stage adaptation of T.B. Aldrich's 1896 masterpiece. Aldrich was hailed for abandoning the moralistic tone of 19th century children's literature, instead telling his story from a child's view, full of the wonder, confusion and the mildly bad behavior of a real boy. Pontine brings these stories to life onstage with a cast of bunraku style puppets. The action of the play is enhanced by piano music composed by New Hampshire native, Edward McDowell (1860 - 1908) the late 19th century American tone-poet, whose home in Peterborough NH is now the McDowell Artists Colony. The story is also an eloquent and intimate evocation of daily life in Portsmouth, circa 1850. This program is appropriate for 4th graders to adults. Join us!

The movie Wall-E will be shown at the Library on April 28^th at 2:00 PM. All ages are invited to attend and there is no sign up required. The movie is 98 minutes long and will end a little after 3:30.

At 3:45, after Wall-E, there will be a Robot Building Workshop for children ages 5-9. Parents are encouraged to stay and assist.

NH State Library expands offerings for visually impaired

The New Hampshire State Library’s Talking Books Service is expanding its offerings to include audiobooks available from the New Hampshire Downloadable Books service.

Talking Books provides audiobooks at no cost to those unable to read or use standard print materials as a result of a temporary or permanent visual or physical limitation. Patrons are provided with special audio players and can select from thousands of titles available in Talking Books’ library.

Each year, Talking Books serves more than 2,000 New Hampshire residents and lends more than 90,000 books.

New Hampshire’s Talking Books Service will continue to make material from its existing lending library available. In addition, patrons will now also be able to use digital players, such as iPods, to listen to titles available from the New Hampshire Downloadable Books service.

“New Hampshire’s Talking Books Service has provided material to the blind and physically challenged—including veterans—for generations. Often it is the only way that they are able to access these materials,” said Michael York, state librarian. “The New Hampshire State Library is pleased to be able to expand this service by making downloadable audio books available to them.”

To access material from New Hampshire Downloadable Books, Talking Books’ patrons will need to contact their local library to see if it belongs to the New Hampshire Downloadable Books Consortium; they will also need a valid library card, computer, internet access and compatible audio player. Patrons whose libraries do not belong to the New Hampshire Downloadable Books Consortium can work directly with Talking Books Service to set up an account.

Come Back to the Future with us on Friday night Jan. 21st at 6:30pm. Free popcorn and retro candy! This movie will be shown in conjunction with the Recreation Department's showing of The Last Waltz at the Senior Center as part of our Community Movie Series. (We'll be doing this again in February and March so stay tuned).
Then on Sunday Jan. 23rd at 4pm we'll be showing the movie Fresh, cosponsored by Greener Hopkinton. Fresh is a documentary about the production and availability of locally and sustainably grown food. A panel discussion about NH's local food supply will follow. Panelists will include Tim Bassett, owner of Gould Hill Farm, dairy operator Jamie Robertson of Bohanan Farm, and Jim Ramanek, master gardener of Warner River Organics in Webster.
Both movies are free and open to the public and will be held in the Library's Community Room. Join us!

Be sure not to miss our Craft Fair, Food and Music Celebration on Sunday November 7 from 2-5 pm in the Community Room. It's our closing celebration for Hopkinton READS! Our Craft Fair will feature fine items from some of Hopkinton's best talent. Crafters have generously agreed to donate 20% of the proceeds from their sales to Partners in Health to support their work in Haiti. So, for those of you who have been wanting to do something regarding the most recent crisis that has hit Haiti AND would like to do some holiday shopping, this is the IDEAL event for you!! Entertainment for the afternoon will include music by the Hopkinton Steel Band and the Mike Alberici Caribbean Trio. And of course, there will be refreshments!

We have two great programs this week! On Tuesday October 19th at 7pm, join us as a diverse panel of health care providers talk about their experiences in Haiti and other areas hard hit by poverty. A 60 Minutes episode from January 2010 on the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti will also be shown. Then on Thursday October 21 at 7pm, we'll show the film The Road to Fondwa with a discussion to follow.

Up against centuries of oppression and decimated natural resources, the people of Fondwa have taken matters into their own hands. Children, mothers, priests and students all pitch in fro a better tomorrow in this film of hope. "A better Haiti is possible...and indeed, it is on the way". Fr. Joseph Philippe, Fondwa, Haiti.

Local Aide Group Brings Hope to Haitian Children with Harry Stewart. Wednesday October 13 at 7pm

Through poignant photos, local aide worker Harry Stewart speaks of his five trips to Haiti with a Londonderry-based relief organization that helps feed and school some of Haiti’s poorest children. Harry’s most recent trip was in May, after the country’s devastating earthquake that created an outpouring of international relief. Like Mountains Beyond Mountains, Harry provides a eyewitness account of an achingly impoverished country and its hopeful, spirited people. Held in the Community Room at the library and free of charge!

The Summer Reading Program is wrapping up!

On Wednesday August 11th from 2-4pm, author Michael Sullivan will be here with games of chess, both big and small. BIG CHESS will be played on a 16 foot square board with correspondingly large pieces! All chess players are invited.

Also on Wednesday August 11th at 6:30pm, we'll have Marek Bennett and Friends here for a family concert, with singing, drumming and guitar. Kids ages 21/2 to 4 (with their parents) and kids going into Kindergarten through 5th grade are welcome. Please call or email the library to register for this program.

It's Friday Night Movie Time! We'll be showing a movie in the Community Room July 30th at 7pm. Here's the description - can you guess the title? (The movie is rated PG) We'll have popcorn and drinks too.

The beautiful princess Giselle is banished from the animated land of Andalasia by the evil queen. She finds herself in the gritty streets of the real, modern-day Manhattan. Shocked by this strange new environment that does not operate on a "happily ever after" basis, Giselle find herself adrift in a chaotic world that is badly in need of enchantment. New! Passes to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston

Thanks to the Friends of the Library, we now have passes to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The MFA pass is redeemable at any ticket desk and entitles two people to $7 general admission. The pass may not be combined with any other offers. Children aged 6 and under are admitted free at all times. Children aged 7-17 are admitted for $7.50 on school days until 3 pm. At all other times children aged 7-17 are admitted free. The pass does not allow discounts on shopping, parking, dining, films, concerts, lectures/seminars or courses. Call or email the library to reserve the pass.

Balloon Glow 2010!

Join us again this year for a very special event on Wednesday June 23rd starting at 7:30pm. Bring a picnic, wear your pjs and come enjoy the glow from our visiting hot air balloons. This is a family event. Rain/wind date will be Thursday the 24th at the same time. You can see some scenes from last year's balloon glow.

Local authors Kevin Flynn and Rebecca Lavoie will be here on June 3rd at 7pm to discuss their new true-crime book Our Little Secret about the murder of Daniel Paquette that went unsolved for 20 years until 2005. Birding Presentation and Guided Bird Walk

Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day and learn to bird! On Thursday, May 6th from 6:30-8pm we'll have a Birding Presentation in the Library's Community Room. On Saturday May 15th from 8-10am join us for a Guided Bird Walk behind the library. Both programs are for ages 12 and up. Registration is limited to 15. Please call 746-3663 or email info@hopkintontownlibrary.org to register. Meet at the library for the presentation and the bird walk. Note: binoculars and field guides will be available to share, but please bring your own if you have them. You will need them for Thursday and Saturday.

National Library Week Programs

April 11-17 is National Library Week and we're having some great programs to celebrate!

David Carroll - Readings and Conversation. Thursday April 15th at 7pm. Local award-winning author David Carroll will read from his recent book Following the Water: A Hydromancer's Notebook and discuss his adventures in nature and his artistic process. Books will be available for signing and sale.
Family Music Jamboree with Marek Bennett and Friends. Friday April 16th from 6:30-8pm. All ages are welcome to this musical celebration of "Read into the Knight" - the theme of this year's Summer Reading Program.
Altered Book Workshop with Joell Gaskill. Saturday April 17th from 11am-2pm. Create a unique book with materials provided or bring your own materials of personal significance. Registration required.

All programs will take place in the Community Room and are free!

Two programs this week

Lecturer, historian, artist, iconographer, storyteller, and teacher Marina Forbes will present two programs at the library this week. On Wednesday March 24th at 7pm join us for Russian Faberge Eggs and Lacquer Boxes: From Fine Art to Fine Craft, a beautifully illustrated presentation on the life and work of Russian master jeweled egg artist, Peter Carl Faberge. You will learn about the important roll of egg and lacquer box painting in Russian culture, and on the elevation of these traditional forms to the level of high art under the patronage of the tsars. Then on Saturday March 27 from 1-3:30pm we'll have a Hands-on Workshop led by Marina in which participants will learn how to render a variety of delightful images on wooden eggs. Materials will be supplied (wooden eggs, stands and brushes, with some additional materials for sale). Registration is required for the Hands-on Workshop. A New Hampshire Humanities Council Program made possible by the support of the Hopkinton Public Library Foundation.

Energy Raisers with Plymouth Area Renewable Energy Initiative (PAREI)
PAREI is an energy efficiency and conservation organization whose goals include making renewable energy more accessible and affordable for all. To this end, PAREI has to date coordinated over 35 "Energy Raisers" in the tradition of Amish barn raising where neighbors work together to install solar hot water heaters at each other's homes. Come learn about this effective organization and the work they've accomplished on Sunday February 21st at 3pm in the library's community room.
